The 178 boot first appeared in Lewis Leathers range around 1967 and was soon adopted for racing by some of the greatest names in the sport, Mike Hailwood, John Cooper and Giacomo Agostini to name a few. In 1965 Lewis Leathers successfully applied for a patent which enabled the boots to become attached to the racing suit via the application of velcro to the outer leg of the suit and the inside of the boot, feature which is still incorporated to this day.
