日本のチョッパーシーン、その先駆者たる男が拓いた道
The trail blazed by the pioneer of Japan’s chopper scene
1978年、東京で“Motorcycles DEN”の看板を掲げ、 80年代からアメリカのハワイに進出した後、米国本土のカスタムショーで独創的かつハイテックなマシンを出展し、見事トロフィーを獲得した男────今や世界から注目を集める日本のカスタムシーンであるが、その流れの起点であり、先駆者がここに見る佐藤由紀夫という人物だろう。
1993年に不慮の事故によって、この世を去ったことから彼を“伝説”のように語るムードも今の日本の業界に色濃く残るのだが、しかし、きっと本人はそれを望んでいない。おそらく求めるのは“表現者”としての正当な評価だ。だからこそ、後世に語り継ぐべき佐藤由紀夫の軌跡をこの特集では伝えたい。
After setting up Motorcycles DEN in Tokyo in 1978, he made inroads into Hawaii in the 80s and later exhibited original and hi-tech machines at mainland US custom shows, where he gained trophies and glory. It could be said that Yukio Sato was the pioneer responsible for starting Japan’s custom scene, which is now gaining worldwide attention.
Since his accidental death in 1993, he has taken on a mythic aura when some in the industry talk about him. However, that is not what he wanted. Rather, he probably wanted to be honestly judged by the way he expressed himself. For this reason, we are dedicating this special feature to telling Yukio Sato's story, something which should be handed down to future generations.
NORTHERN SPRINGERS
加国マニトバ州の街Winnipegの一画に「墓場」と呼ばれるホットスポットありき──昨今チョッパー乗りから注目を集めるスプリンガービルダーEric Michael Marshallとその店BONEYARDを、トロント在住の写真家Sid Tangerineがレポートする。
In Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, lies a hot spot called The Boneyard. Toronto photographer Sid Tangerine interviews Eric Michael Marshall, a springer builder currently attracting the attention of chopper riders, about his life and his store, The Boneyard.

ChopperとHot-Rod、R&Rを崇拝するふたりのスキモノが、2004年にロンドンの地下で自主制作したDICE MAGAZINEは、今や世界中のチョッパージョッキーに知られる存在。Dean MicetichとMatt Davisが二人三脚で定期刊行を続けるも2017年、病魔に冒されたMattが永逝。 旧知の友をなくし失意の底で悲しみに暮れていた相方Deanを救ったのは、亡き友が遺した1台のH-Dだった──
In a London basement in 2004, two hedonists who worshipped choppers, hot rods, and rock ‘n’ roll independently created DicE magazine, known among chopper jockeys around the world today. Dean Micetich and Matt Davis continued publishing together until 2017, when Matt was struck by illness and passed away. What rescued Dean from the depths of despair brought on by the loss of his old friend was the Harley-Davidson Matt left him.
SHOVEL NATION / The Legacy from 1966 to 1985
1936年にデビューしたEL=Knuckleheadに端を発するH-DのOHV伝説は、17年間続いたPanhead期を経てShovelheadへと継承される。ALL ALLOY化したBlockheadにバトンを渡すまでの20年────Shovel Nationの隆盛を今に伝える6つの創作が、ここに集結!
H-D’s legendary OHV period began with the debut of the EL “Knucklehead” in 1936 and continued through the 17-year Panhead area before moving into the Shovelhead era. Here we have gathered 6 creations that convey the prosperity of the 20-year period before Shovel Nation passed the baton to the all-alloy Blockhead.
